Fall Foliage

Published by Jason under Photos, The Weather

As I’ve walked our dog over the last week or so I keep telling myself I need to bring the camera and capture some of the lovely foliage we have now. It rained quite hard Friday and some of the beautiful reds and oranges were knocked to the ground, so I knew I needed to bring the camera on a walk soon, or I’d miss what was left. For our evening walk through Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, the dog had to put up with me snapping pictures of The Sisters of Mercy Mother House, some of the foliage in Evergreen Cemetery, and a few other interesting images as we walked along.

The photoset is posted in Flickr. The building with the bronze dome is the Mother House. All of the other pictures were snapped within the cemetery itself. I only covered about a third of the grounds on the walk, but the dog was getting quite impatient, so I had to cut my photo session short (that, and I started to run out of good light). I especially liked the way the leaves framed the bell at the little chapel in the cemetery, and snapped a couple pictures of that.

There have been some other scenic views as we’ve ridden around in and outside of Portland in the last weeks. I’ll have to start bringing my camera with me when we go out so I don’t miss them all.

Restaurants: 51 Wharf

Published by Jason under Places to Eat

With friends visiting from Connecticut last weekend, She and I tried for reservations at Fore Street and Street & Co. Apparently those are a tough table, even in the off-season. We’ll keep that in mind. After striking out there, the four of us decided to simply head to Old Port and walk around until something struck our fancy. Starting from the Union Street end of Wharf, we browsed the menus at 51 Wharf and Cake. Both were nearly empty at 6:30 on a Saturday–not a great sign. 51 Wharf did have an interesting looking menu, though, so we kept that in mind. We stuck our head around the corner at Street & Co. to see if the wait was bearable. They told us we wouldn’t eat before 9:00 PM, so we kept walking.

We checked menus at Vignola, Bull Feeney’s, and J’s Oyster House before deciding we’d head back to 51 Wharf. They had said we’d be seated immediately (another not so great sign), and our appetites got the best of us. We were seated quickly, and ordered a bottle of wine while we looked over the menu and commented on how great a space they had for a restaurant. The “downstairs” area where we sat looked like it had been somewhat recently converted from the dance floor of a bar, as the kitchen was curtained off and the speakers seemed to still be mounted in the corner. The “upstairs” portion, which we walked through on the way to our table, had the bar, and little mini TVs at just about every stool. Very cool.

We each ordered a soup or salad (I had their spicy Mediterranean chicken soup, which was actually quite good), and a cheese plate for starters. Oddly, the waitress did not bring us plates with our bread, so we waited until the cheese plate so we’d have somewhere to put the bread while not munching. The cheese sampler was very nice, though the watermelon wedges seemed out of place for October. As I said, my soup was very good, and the other soups and salad got good reviews as well.

Unfortunately, our entrees did not receive such high marks. My stuffed chicken was supposed to be served stuffed with crab meat and wrapped in prosciutto. Instead, I got a somewhat dry breast of chicken with crab wrapped in bacon. It was not bad, but it didn’t match the menu description either. The vegetable of the day was a chunk of acorn squash, baked, with a little butter and perhaps a hint of brown sugar. The baked stuffed scrod ordered by our friend was more of a baked piece of fish with seafood stuffing on top. Another dish was missing the sauce, and someone who asked for double vegetable and no starch got a baked potato anyway.

None of the food was bad, but it was nothing to rave about either (with the possible exception of my very tasty soup). They simply did not live up to their descriptions (or their price–our total check was $150 + tip, and we only had one bottle of wine). We may try them again, but given the choice between 51 Wharf and most any other restaurant we’ve tried in Old Port, I’d stay away from 51 Wharf. On the whole it was simply a disappointment.

Portland, Maine != Portland, Oregon

Published by Jason under General

When I checked my email before bed last night, I was excited to see that one of my photos (shown below) had been selected for the short list to make the 3rd edition of the Schmap Guide to Portland. I’d never heard of Schmap before, so I started doing a little digging.

Festival of Nations 003

Looking at their homepage (www.schmap.com), I noticed that most of their travel guides seemed to be for cities a good bit bigger than Portland, ME. I took a look at the photo submission page that I was given, and the guide that it was intended to be part of. Sure enough, I saw things about Mt. Hood and saw Vancouver, WA on the map just above Portland. As I suspected, Schmap does not offer a guide to my new home town but rather that larger and more well-known Portland on the west coast. And thus, my excitement evaporated into disappointment…

Stop Raining Already!

Published by Jason under The Weather

The weather up here has taken a drastic turn for the worst. It’s been down right yucky (technical term) the last few days. We had what was apparently the first nor’easter of the season last night and it was huge. The storm was so bad that we had to let our dog sleep on the bed with us. She’s scared of thunder and couldn’t stop shaking or pacing until she was wedged between Her and me. We didn’t sleep quite as well as usual, but I think I wouldn’t have slept at all with her walking around and whining all night either.

Thankfully, it appears that this weather pattern is clearing out for the weekend. We have friends coming up from Connecticut and would like to be able to show them around a bit. 50° and drizzle doesn’t exactly give the greatest impression of Portland. Instead, we’re forecasted for almost 60° and sunny for both tomorrow and Sunday. Yay!

Looking at the radar, it also appears that the storm is now north of Boston. That’s good. I was planning on going out tonight to catch the ALCS game (and a few beers). Let’s go Sox!

Turned on the Heat Today

Published by Jason under General, The Weather

So my hotel in Kentucky charged a ridiculous $9.99 per day for internet access. Needless to say, I didn’t agree to those charges, and so I didn’t do any writing from Louisville. Of course, when I got my bill, I saw that they’d removed the charge for the one day I did agree to because I was staying on a corporate rate. D’oh. I should have asked about that before assuming I’d have to pay.

Anyway, I arrived back in Portland from the extreme heat of Louisville and was granted by some splendid fall weather. Saturday and Sunday were both in the mid sixties and sunny during the day. You couldn’t ask for nicer weather in October. Unfortunately, today has been cold (52° for a high) and drizzly. In fact, we finally gave in and switched on the heat this afternoon. It’s only set to 70°, and we’ll probably not go higher than that this winter, but it does feel a little like weakness to turn it on so early in the season. I guess that’s fall in Maine though.

I’ll still take this over Louisville. Smelling the salt air when I got off the plane was such a wonderful tonic. Coastal living is simply wonderful. She and I are still so happy we decided to take the plunge and head up here.
