Wet and Wild Weather

Published by Jason under The Weather

June has been a very mixed month up here weather-wise. We’ve had a handful of days in the 80s (I even set up the air conditioner in my office earlier this month). We’ve had a number of typical spring days in the mid 70s and partly cloudy (perfect weather, as far as I’m concerned). And lately, we’ve had cool, stormy weather. There was quite a thunder storm yesterday, and it was far from the first rain we’ve had this month. I would love it if Mother Nature could make up her mind and stick with a pattern (especially if it were the 70s and a few clouds pattern). But, as I told a friend the other day, it beats snow! :-)

First “Summer” Barbeques

Published by Jason under Meeting People, The Weather

The march toward summer continues! After several straight days in the 60s, with a few breaking into the 70s, Amber and I went to our first “summer” barbeques of the season this weekend. On Saturday night we attended a 20- and 30-somethings dinner at our church in Cape Elizabeth. We’d originally planned on making pizza in the rectory kitchen, but the weather was nice enough that the rector decided to switch to chicken and salmon on the grill. Of course, by the time evening rolled around, it’d gotten cloudy and cooler again, so we ate inside, but it’s the thought that counts.

Yesterday after church we went over to Westbrook to have lunch with our friends Chris and Beth in their new house. Being sunny and warm, cheeseburgers on the grill were in order. They have a screened-in porch out back, so we ate outside (at least more so than the night before). It was a little breezy, but still quite comfortable for outdoor eating. You can’t beat food hot off the grill for imparting a summery feeling. I’m now scouting the Sunday flyers for good deals on a charcoal grill to set up out behind our apartment. Yum…

Spring is Sprung

Spring is Sprung
The flowers are in bloom. Amber and I slept with the bedroom window open last night for the first time this year. Our afternoon walk with the dog found me feeling a little too warm with a short-sleeved shirt and long pants. Of course, it’s raining again today…but we’ll take it. Welcome spring!

Back Home and the Weather is Wonderful

Published by Jason under General, The Weather

I just got back from a week-long business trip to Louisville, KY and it appears that I brought some nice weather with me. Low 70s and sunny! What a wonderful welcome home present. Amber and I are headed to The Front Room for dinner tonight. I’ll post our review this weekend.

So Much For Spring

Published by Jason under The Weather

The calendar says it has official been spring (a.k.a. “mud season” up here) for a full week now. The view from my window begs to differ. The temperature broke the 50°F mark for the first time in weeks on Wednesday, and yesterday was in the high 40s. This morning, however, we awoke to a quarter inch of snow, and it hasn’t stopped yet. According to WGME 13:

Don’t put away those shovels and snow tires. A spring storm is bringing yet another round of snow to much of Maine. Meteorologist Sarah Long says a storm that moved into the region in the early morning hours will stick around most of Friday.

By the time snow tapers off this afternoon, 4 to 8 inches is predicted for York and Cumberland counties. 3 to 6 inches are expected in portions of central and western Maine, with lesser amounts the farther north you go.

That means that Portland will likely top the 100-inch mark for the winter. So far, it’s gotten 99.4 inches.

100″!?!? That’s quite a winter!

The Sea Dogs are set to begin practice up here on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week and just recently posted on their website that they’d finally gotten Hadlock Field clear of snow. So much for that! I just hope this is the last of it so their April 11 home opener goes as planned. I’ll be in Kentucky that evening for work, but those of you with tickets better plan on bringing a hat and mittens to the ballpark. Ahhh, winter in northern New England!
