I just finished a walk with my dog and was musing on the 12″ or so of snow on the ground in most places. There are snow banks as high as my head, and spring looks much farther off than two weeks. As I rounded a corner, I saw a car with a Sea Dogs bumper sticker which got me to thinking “I wonder when their home opener is? Is the field going to have to be plowed between innings?”

So I surfed over to PortlandSeaDogs.com to check it out. There, in a nice big red and blue banner, was the count down to the opener. 35 days until Hadlock Field hosts a ball game. It may flirt with 50° this weekend, but it only just got up to the freezing point today. It seems rather wishful thinking that it’ll be baseball weather in five short weeks. I sort of doubt Amber and I will be taking in the opening day festivities, but for those who are undeterred by wearing a parka to the park, ticket packages are on sale now. Maybe we’ll see you there. Just not until May…

So winter has officially arrived in Maine, right on time. We got a warm-up Friday night with ~7″ of snow, and it’s been snowing for the last six hours now, with no end in sight. They’re calling for a total of nearly a foot and a half from this storm, which happens to fall on the first official day of winter, bringing the total on the ground to over two feet. I guess a white Christmas is a pretty sure bet now…

Update: Snowfall total was 15″, bringing the weekend total to just under two feet. Drifting, thanks to 30 mph gusts, left piles up to my waist in some spots. Oh, and we suffered a cracked pipe in the basement, so we’ve got a plumber hanging out today. I love winter!

It’s not unbearably cold inside, but there is definitely a lingering chill that was making it harder to type. And yes, I’m already wearing long sleaves and heavier socks. I try to go as long as I can before turning on the heat (even though the oil is included in our rent), and I’m pretty sure I’ll turn it off and on again a few more times before it stays on the for the season, but for now, I’m enjoying the warm air wafting from the radiator near my desk.

We’ve had a number of typical spring days in the mid 70s and partly cloudy (perfect weather, as far as I’m concerned). And lately, we’ve had cool, stormy weather. There was quite a thunder storm yesterday, and it was far from the first rain we’ve had this month. I would love it if Mother Nature could make up her mind and stick with a pattern (especially if it were the 70s and a few clouds pattern). But, as I told a friend the other day, it beats snow!

The march toward summer continues! After several straight days in the 60s, with a few breaking into the 70s, Amber and I went to our first “summer” barbeques of the season this weekend. On Saturday night we attended a 20- and 30-somethings dinner at our church in Cape Elizabeth. We’d originally planned on making pizza in the rectory kitchen, but the weather was nice enough that the rector decided to switch to chicken and salmon on the grill. Of course, by the time evening rolled around, it’d gotten cloudy and cooler again, so we ate inside, but it’s the thought that counts.

Yesterday after church we went over to Westbrook to have lunch with our friends Chris and Beth in their new house. Being sunny and warm, cheeseburgers on the grill were in order. They have a screened-in porch out back, so we ate outside (at least more so than the night before). It was a little breezy, but still quite comfortable for outdoor eating. You can’t beat food hot off the grill for imparting a summery feeling. I’m now scouting the Sunday flyers for good deals on a charcoal grill to set up out behind our apartment. Yum…
